OpenVLC - A platform for Visible Light Communication

Lower the barriers of entry to VLC research

Visible Light Communication (VLC): VLC adopts the visible light between 400 and 800 THz (780-375 nm) to transmit data wirelessly. It has the potential to become a complementary technology to Radio Frequency (RF) communication. The IEEE has developed the 802.15.7 standard for short-range communication using visible light.  This standard specifies three PHY layers, which support data rate varying from 11.67 kb/s to 96 Mb/s. VLC is also receiving strong attention from the designers of the next generation of cellular networks.

Objective of the project OpenVLC: Though there has been a great deal of interest in VLC in recent years, the lack of an open-source reference platform is hindering the progress of the VLC research community. We take an initial step toward this and have designed the OpenVLC, an open-source software-defined VLC networking platform for fast prototyping, which runs on the cost-effective yet powerful BeagleBone Black board.
